1 lb (450 g) ground beef (or half beef, half Italian sausage)
1 small onion, finely chopped
3–4 cloves garlic, minced
1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
1 tsp sugar (optional, old-school balance)
1½ tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
1½ tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried basil
½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
1 bay leaf
½ cup water or beef broth
Pasta
